Ethicon (part of the J&J family of companies) enlisted the expertise of Granum A/I to develop a strategy to accommodate growth and recruit the next generation of staff for the IT Department. Central to the design challenge was the transformation of the client's existing enclosed office workplace to an open plan strategy reflecting the company's mission, values and brand essence. Granum A/I developed a project strategy based on the concept of community, a collaborative and inspiring new workplace designed to be a home away from home, a place to help create connections, promote chance encounters and collaboration among the staff. The new space is organized as neighborhood zones connected by passageways to a central commons. This area houses a variety of engaging spaces with writable walls to encourage spontaneous creativity, huddle rooms for interaction as well as quiet rooms for staff to focus and relax. Other shared amenities include a multi-functional living room designed for gathering, meeting and brainstorming. The team room is enclosed with telescoping sliding glass allowing privacy for meetings or complete openness to become an extension of the café. Movable furniture throughout shared areas allow users the ability to rearrange their work setting according to individual preference. For vibrancy, bright pops of J&J brand colors and graphics are used to express the energetic spirit of the new workplace and communicate the company's brand identity.

The project's limited budget and tight schedule helped determine the design direction. The IT Department’s needs required that the construction be completed with minimal disruption and downtime. Working closely with the IT leadership, the design team strategically considered its design opportunities in addressing the client’s schedule and budget goals. The result is a new workplace offering diverse choices for employees and expressing the casual, collaborative and forward thinking style of the department's Millennial staff.
